Leah Yahyavi- Designer and Owner
1. What was the biggest strain or set back of opening a business on your own?
"I did feel a strain with my age. I started when I was 19, now 21. Age is hard because everyone questions how you're doing it and what you're doing. Because of school! People always say "are you going to school?" It helps, but you don't HAVE too! I have been a full time student from the very beginning of all this and it's a lot of work, but I am proud of my successes! School is what society wants, but if you have drive and persistence the possibilities are endless."
2. What is your end goal for this company?
"I think my end goal is to have a smooth flow of seasonal collections. Right now, I just put something out and it sells, then I make something new and that sells. It has been super staggered but I want my customers to know when products are coming out! I just want it to be more consistent. But overall there is no end goal, I am just going along for the ride."
3. How are you giving back to the local community?
"All of our clothes are printed here in Santa Barbara. All of my fabric are ethically sourced, all inks are water based and eco friendly as well. Being aware of the products you use and how they affect our environment is super important to Lagoon Designs.
I've also been looking into local non profits to donate a certain percentage of my sales to. I'm waiting till I'm hitting a higher annual amount so I can really give a chunk of change that's going to make a difference.
Connecting with local boutiques to sell local product is one of my goals for 2017. I think that is something really important for our community but also people who travel here."
